Coax Networking Guide
Short answer: each MoCA version is faster than the last: about 175 Mbps for MoCA 1.1, 400–500 Mbps for MoCA 2.0, up to about 1 Gbps for bonded MoCA 2.0 and up to 2.5 Gbps for MoCA 2.5. All versions are backward compatible, so you can mix them on one coax network. Buy MoCA 2.5 today.
MoCA versions at a glance
| Version | Typical real-world throughput | Where you’ll find it |
|---|---|---|
| MoCA 1.1 | Around 175 Mbps | Older set-top boxes and provider equipment |
| MoCA 2.0 | Around 400–500 Mbps | Older adapters and gateways |
| Bonded MoCA 2.0 | Up to about 1 Gbps | Many provider gateways and gigabit adapters |
| MoCA 2.5 | ✅ Up to 2.5 Gbps | Current multi-gig adapters such as the Kiwee range |
Can different MoCA versions work together?
Yes. MoCA is backward compatible: a MoCA 2.5 adapter can join a network with older MoCA 2.0 or 1.1 devices. Each link runs at the best speed both ends support, so two MoCA 2.5 adapters talk at 2.5 Gbps even if an older set-top box is on the same coax.
Watch the frequency band. Adapters must use the same band to talk to each other. Homes with cable internet use D-band; homes with satellite TV need extended E-band MoCA or G.hn. See MoCA with satellite TV.
Which MoCA version should you buy today?
MoCA 2.5. It costs little more than bonded 2.0, supports today’s multi-gig internet plans and Wi-Fi 6 and 7 backhaul, and leaves room to grow.

Frequently asked questions
Is MoCA 2.5 backward compatible with MoCA 2.0 and 1.1?
Yes. A MoCA 2.5 adapter joins networks with older MoCA 2.0 or 1.1 devices on the same band. Each link runs at the best speed both ends support.
How fast is MoCA 2.5?
MoCA 2.5 delivers up to 2.5 Gbps of real throughput, compared with about 1 Gbps for bonded MoCA 2.0.
Is bonded MoCA 2.0 still worth buying?
Rarely. MoCA 2.5 costs little more, is up to 2.5 times faster and supports multi-gig internet plans and Wi-Fi 7 backhaul.
